The largest marathon in the world returns to the Big Apple, and the 53rd edition of the 26.2-mile jaunt through the five boroughs of New York City figures to be the biggest ever.
More than 50,000 runners will run the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, along with millions more expected to watch on television.
American runners are looking to break a drought by crossing the finish line first. It's been 15 years since Meb Keflezighi won on the men's side in 2009. Shalane Flanagan, in 2017, was the last American woman to win the NYC marathon.
What day is the NYC Marathon Race 2024?
The New York City marathon is held each year on the first Sunday in November. This year, that's Nov. 3, 2024.

New York City Marathon route map
The 26.2-mile course starts in Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, travels across the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn, then up to Queens, over to Manhattan, up into the Bronx and back down to finish at West 67th Street in Central Park.

Where to watch NYC Marathon in person
While the marathon draws tens of thousands of participants, organizers also expect two million spectators to line the route cheering them on.

Brooklyn:
Fourth Avenue (Miles 2-4): Watch the race come over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and continue along Fourth Avenue. Subway access: R
Fourth Avenue and Flatbush Avenue (Mile 8): Subway access: B, D, N, Q, R, 2, 3, 4, 5
Williamsburg and Greenpoint (Miles 10-13): Watch the race as it approaches Pulaski Bridge and crosses into Queens. Subway access: G, L, M, J

The Verrazzano-Narrows, Pulaski, Queensboro, Madison Avenue and Willis Avenue bridges will be closed, as well as dozens of streets across the five boroughs.

If you’re watching New York Marathon from home, you can catch the race live on ESPN2 and in Spanish on ESPN3 from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Eastern time. In New York, it will air locally on WABC-TV, Channel 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Which celebrities are running the NYC Marathon race?
There are always celebrities in the field in New York Marathon, and this year is no different. The actors Randall Park and Greg Rikaart are running the race for the first time, while Nev Schulman, the host of “Catfish,” is running his eighth New York marathon and his second as a guide for a visually impaired runner.
Other reality TV stars running include Matt James and Peter Weber of “The Bachelor,” Tayshia Adams, Zac Clark and Joe Amabile of “The Bachelorette” and Vinny Guadagnino of “Jersey Shore.”
New York City Marathon prize money
Prize money is equal for men and women, and the top American finishers in the men's and women's races will receive $25,000. A $50,000 bonus will be paid to the Open Division and/or Wheelchair Division race winners who break the current event record.
Who won the race last year, New York City Marathon defending champions
Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia, won the men's division in 2:04.58 — breaking the record of 2:05.06 set by Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai in 2011. Kenyan runner Hellen Obiri won the women’s division, finishing in two hours, 27 minutes and 23 seconds.
When was the first New York City marathon?
The first NYC Marathon, was contested on Sept. 13, 1970. It had a field of 127 runners, who ran a loop around Park Drive in Central Park. An estimated crowd of about 100 watched.
American Gary Muhrcke won in 2:31.38. Only 55 runners finished.
