The highly anticipated New York City Marathon is back, ready to thrill running enthusiasts and spectators alike. Held annually on the first Sunday of November, this iconic marathon is set to embark on its 53rd edition on November 3, 2024.
 With more than 50,000 runners expected to participate, the event promises excitement, fierce competition, and inspiring performances.

The 2024 TCS York City Marathon starts at 8 a.m. ET on Nov. 3.


What are the start times for the New York City Marathon?



8:00 a.m. — Men’s Professional Wheelchair Division

8:02 a.m. — Women’s Professional Wheelchair Division


8:22 a.m. — Pushrim and Handcycle AWD Category I

8:22 a.m. — Pushrim and Handcycle AWD Category II and Select Ambulatory AWD Guide/Support


8:35 a.m. — Professional Women

9:05 a.m. — Professional Men

9:10 a.m. — Wave Start 1

9:45 a.m. — Wave Start 2

10:20 a.m. — Wave Start 3

How long is the New York City Marathon expected to last?

What’s the route of the New York City Marathon?


The marathon route starts on Staten Island and winds through the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. Once runners enter Brooklyn, the route goes through Queens and Manhattan. The route then enters the Bronx, and back down into Manhattan again toward the finish at Central Park, at 67th Street on West Drive.




What are the expected finishing time for runners in the New York City Marathon.?



Below are the expected estimated times when different groups will begin to cross the finish line.

9:30 a.m. Professional men's wheelchair athletes

9:40 a.m. Professional women's wheelchair athletes

11:05 a.m. Professional women

11:15 a.m. Professional men

11:55 a.m. Remaining runners

8:30 p.m. Final finishers

Who are the defending champions of the New York City Marathon?


Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia won the New York City Marathon men's race on Sunday in 2 hours, 4 minutes and 58 seconds, breaking the all-time record. Albert Korir of Kenya finished as the runner-up at 2:06:57. Shura Kitata of Ethiopia came in 3rd place at 2:07:11. 

Hellen Obiri of Kenya won the women's race, clocking in at 2:27:23. Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia was the runner-up, with a time of 2:27:29. Sharon Lokedi of Kenya finished in 3rd place at 2:27:33. 



What is the prize money for the New York City Marathon?


To be eligible for prize money, runners must finish in 3 hours, 10 minutes, or less. If a participant sets a course record in an event, that athlete will receive an additional $50,000. 

The prize money is the same for the men and women, and top American finishers in the men’s and women’s races will receive $25,000.

Marathon runners and spectators alike should be treated to great running weather. The forecast for this weekend calls for a dip in temperatures, after a toasty Halloween, and mostly clear skies. Sunday morning looks to start chilly, so having an extra layer along the course wouldn't be a bad idea.

 -- The 2024 TCS New York City Marathon is set to have the stars out in a few weeks.

The New York Road Runners on Thursday announced its celebrities lineup of who will be participating in the event, including actor Randall Park.

Park is best known for the ABC sitcom Fresh Off the Boat will make his 26.2-mile debut on behalf of KultureCity.

Producer and host of MTV's Catfish Nev Schulman will run in his eighth TCS New York City Marathon and second as a guide runner for a visually impaired Achilles athlete.

How can I run the 2025 New York City Marathon next year?



There are more than a few entry methods prospective marathon runners can use to lock in their spot for next year’s race, all of which are detailed at length on New York Road Runners’ website. Completing the 9+1 Program, raising money on behalf of a charity, or qualifying by time for your specific age group tend to be the most utilized, though.

 Details of the ballot for the 2025 race are not yet available, although it is likely to open in February or March next year.


The entries available to non-guaranteed applicants will be filled through three drawings, one in each of the following applicant pools:


  • “NYC metro area” applicants: Residents in and within 60 miles of NYC
  • “National” applicants: U.S. residents outside of the NYC metro area
  • “International” applicants: Non-U.S. residents, including Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories
