Wout van Aert Crashes Pogacar’s Party in Paris, But Slovenian Still Makes Tour de France History

Wout van Aert spoiled what could have been a picture-perfect finish for Tadej Pogacar on the final stage of the 2025 Tour de France—but that didn’t stop the Slovenian from making history.

Heading into the last day with a comfortable lead of over four minutes, Pogacar had already locked in his fourth overall Tour win. Sunday’s ride through the rainy streets of Paris was all about the stage victory—and a bit of glory.

The 26-year-old didn’t hold back. He broke away in a six-man group during an electrifying final stretch on the same course used for last year’s Olympic Games. But it was Belgian powerhouse Van Aert who stole the spotlight.

Attacking hard on the last climb to the iconic Basilica of Sacré Coeur in Montmartre, Van Aert surged ahead and never looked back. He widened the gap in the final 5 kilometers, ultimately crossing the line solo on the Champs-Élysées—19 seconds ahead of a chasing trio that included Pogacar.

It was a much-needed win for Van Aert, who had endured a frustrating Tour this year. His triumphant ride marked his 10th career Tour de France stage victory, a milestone moment for the 29-year-old.

Pogacar, however, didn’t leave empty-handed—far from it. As he rolled across the finish line, he raised his hand in celebration, tying British legend Chris Froome with four Tour de France titles. Only Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, and Miguel Indurain (all with five wins) remain ahead of him in the all-time rankings.

But that’s not all. Pogacar made more history by becoming the first reigning world road race champion to win the Tour since American Greg LeMond did it in 1990. He also secured the polka-dot jersey as King of the Mountains for a third time.

Behind him, Jonas Vingegaard—winner of two previous Tours—came in second overall, trailing Pogacar by four minutes and 24 seconds. Germany’s Florian Lipowitz rounded out the podium in third.
