It's time for the marquee event on the 2025 PGA Tours schedule.


Rory McIlroy topped the J.J. Spaun competed in a three-hole aggregate playoff, beginning at 9 a.m. ET on the par-5 16th hole. McIlroy topped Spaun, finishing at 1 over for the three holes, and Spaun was 3 over after a triple bogey at the 17th hole.



The 2025 Players Championship kicks off Thursday at TPC Sawgrass' Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The Full field of 144 players includes 48 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking, with the top three – Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele – grouped together the first two rounds. 


Rory McIlroy takes home from the purse at the Players is $25 million, with $4.5 million going to the winner along with 750 FedEx Cup points. The purse is also the largest on the PGA Tour, with $25 million up for grabs. The winner will take home $4.5 million. The top five all clear at least $1 million. Finishing inside of the top 40 will net a six-figure payday.


Scheffler is the two-time back-to-back defending champion at The Players and is looking to join Jack Nicklaus as the only players with three Players titles.


The 2025 Players had 48 of the top-50 players in the world, and all of the top 10, led by back-to-back defending champion Scottie Scheffler. 

There are eight past The Players champions who have combined for nine victories: Scheffler (2023, 2024), Justin Thomas (2021), Rory McIlroy (2019), Si Woo Kim (2017), Jason Day (2016), Rickie Fowler (2015), Matt Kuchar (2012), Adam Scott (2004).

Scottie Scheffler made no excuses as he persevered until his neck improved on Sunday and fired a final-round 8-under 64 at the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass to edge Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman and Xander Schauffele, three of the top-10 players in the world, and become the first player to repeat as champion in the 50-year history of the Players.
