Cantlay digs deep to retains 2022 BMW Championship title

BMW Championship 2022: Patrick Cantlay retains title after beating the Scott Stallings

  • American Patrick Cantlay became the first player to successfully defend a tournament in the FedEx Cup post-season by retaining the BMW Championship.

The fourth-ranked player in the world defeated fellow countryman Scott Stallings by one stroke after shooting a final-round 69 at Wilmington.

He made a tap-in par for a 14-under total after birdying hole 17 and finding sand off the 18th tee.

  • Due to his victory, Cantlay will begin the final tournament of the year, the Tour Championship, in second place in the FedEx Cup rankings.

Cantlay will start the one-of-a-kind tournament with staggered starts on eight under, two shots behind leader Scottie Scheffler, whose standing is determined by each player's FedEx results thus far.

Olympic champion Xander Schauffele and Scheffler tied for third place in Wilmington, Delaware, with scores of 11 under.

Rory McIlroy will start the Atlanta Open on four under after shooting a final-round 69 that included birdies on his final three holes to tie for sixth.

  • Shane Lowry, a member of McIlroy's Ryder Cup team, shot a final-round 68 but still finished one place outside the top 30 at East Lake.

  • After making his fifth birdie of the day on the 14th, the former Open champion appeared to be in position to advance, but the Irishman three-putted the hole for a pricey bogey.
