Grisham belts two homers, Yankees top Twins 10-5.
Trent Grisham homered twice and Cody Bellinger added a late blast as the New York Yankees powered past the Minnesota Twins 10-5 on Wednesday night.
Aaron Judge stayed scorching hot, going 3-for-4 to boost his MLB-best batting average to .329. The win pulled New York within four games of first-place Toronto in the AL East race.
Starter Luis Gil was shaky, giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings, but the bullpen locked it down. Fernando Cruz (3-4) got four key outs, and three other relievers combined to finish off Minnesota without allowing another run.
Grisham carried the early offense. He tied the game at 2-2 with a solo shot in the third off Taj Bradley (6-8), then launched a three-run homer in the fourth — his 33rd of the season — deep into the right-field plaza for a 6-2 Yankees lead.
Minnesota clawed back in the fifth with three runs, highlighted by Brooks Lee’s clutch two-run single. But in the top of the inning’s biggest moment, Cody Bellinger made a leaping grab in right-center to rob Royce Lewis and preserve a 7-5 New York edge.
Bellinger later added a two-run homer in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
Lee had three hits for the Twins, while Austin Martin and Lewis chipped in two apiece.
Stat to know: The four earned runs Gil allowed matched his total from his previous four starts combined (22 1/3 innings).
Next up: The Yankees head to Baltimore for a four-game set starting Thursday, with lefty Max Fried (17-5, 3.03 ERA) on the mound. The Twins open a home series Friday against Cleveland, with Pablo López (5-4, 2.64) set to pitch.
