1913 — Walter Johnson closed out the season with his 36th win, pitching the Washington Senators to a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia A’s.

1915 — The Philadelphia Phillies clinched their first NL pennant with a 5-0 win over the Boston Braves, backed by Grover Alexander’s one-hitter.

1954 — Willie Mays made “The Catch,” his legendary over-the-shoulder grab of Vic Wertz’s deep drive, and Dusty Rhodes later homered to lift the New York Giants past the Cleveland Indians 5-2 in Game 1 of the World Series.

1963 — John Paciorek of the Houston Colt .45s played his only major league game, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and four runs scored against the Mets. A back injury ended his career the next year.

1976 — John Montefusco of the San Francisco Giants threw a 9-0 no-hitter against the Braves in Atlanta.

1983 — Oakland’s Mike Warren tossed a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Chicago White Sox.

1986 — Bert Blyleven of the Twins surrendered his record-breaking 47th home run of the season (to Cleveland rookie Jay Bell on his first-ever MLB pitch) but still earned the win as Minnesota rallied to beat Cleveland 6-5.

1986 — In Philadelphia, rookie Greg Maddux of the Cubs defeated his brother, rookie Mike Maddux of the Phillies, 8-3 — the first time brothers opposed each other as rookie pitchers.

1996 — Brady Anderson became the 14th player to hit 50 home runs in a season, though the Orioles lost 4-1 at Toronto. His previous career high was 21.

2001 — Seattle’s Ichiro Suzuki collected his 234th hit of the season, breaking Shoeless Joe Jackson’s 1911 rookie record. The Mariners fell 8-4 to Oakland, but Ichiro’s milestone sealed one of the greatest debut campaigns in baseball history.

2004 — MLB officially announced the Montreal Expos would relocate to Washington, D.C.

2011 — The Tampa Bay Rays clinched the AL wild card with an improbable comeback. After erasing a seven-run deficit, they beat the Yankees 8-7 on Evan Longoria’s 12th-inning homer — just four minutes after Boston blew its own lead in Baltimore.

2018 — The Yankees broke the single-season home run record when Gleyber Torres hit their 265th of the year, surpassing the 1997 Mariners’ total.

2022 — Shohei Ohtani dazzled again, taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning before giving up a single. He earned his 15th win as the Angels beat Oakland 4-2, while also extending his hitting streak to 14 games.
