Stop clutching pearls: Angel Reese spoke the truth about Chicago

Opinion | Angel Reese was right about the Sky — and she shouldn’t have to apologize

The outrage over Angel Reese’s comments on the Chicago Sky is completely overblown.

Nothing she told the Chicago Tribune was wrong. The Sky are near the bottom of the WNBA standings, and saying the team needs a roster upgrade is just stating the obvious. Even her point about not being able to rely on 37-year-old Courtney Vandersloot returning from an ACL tear was rooted in reality. At best, Vandersloot wouldn’t be ready until midseason, and Chicago needs a point guard from Day 1.

The real issue is the reaction. Male athletes criticize teammates and teams all the time — Kobe Bryant, Aaron Rodgers, and countless others — and it’s seen as leadership, not betrayal. Yet when Reese says something honest, it sparks outrage.

This is the double standard women athletes face. They’re expected to smile, stay positive, and never challenge the status quo. Reese, a national champion at LSU and now one of the WNBA’s brightest young stars, has already proven she’s a competitor. Why should she stay quiet while the Sky flounder?

She didn’t trash anyone by name, and nothing she said was untrue. If Victor Wembanyama or Tyrese Haliburton said the same about their teams, no one would blink. But Reese has critics who are eager to tear her down, and they jumped at the chance.

Reese apologized, saying she needs to be more careful with her words. But the truth is, she has nothing to apologize for. The ones who need to be better are those who still refuse to treat women athletes with the same respect as men.
