Messi scores twice in emotional home farewell for Argentina.
Lionel Messi delivered a perfect send-off in what could be his final home World Cup qualifier for Argentina.
In front of a packed Estadio Monumental, Messi scored twice in a 3–0 win over Venezuela, with Lautaro MartÃnez adding the third. The victory kept Argentina on top of South American qualifying with 38 points.
“Being able to finish this way here is what I’ve always dreamed of,” Messi said. “I’ve experienced so much on this pitch—good and bad—but it’s always special to play in front of our fans.”
Messi now has 36 goals in World Cup qualifying, extending his record in South America. His former rival Luis Suárez sits second with 29.
At 37, Messi hasn’t committed to the 2026 World Cup, saying he’ll decide based on how he feels: “If I feel good, I’ll enjoy it. If not, I’d rather not be there.”
Venezuela, still chasing a first-ever World Cup appearance, remains in seventh place with 18 points and a chance at the playoff spot.
