Carroll, Vrabel debut as Raiders face Patriots in season opener.
Pete Carroll begins his first year as Raiders head coach against a familiar opponent — the New England Patriots. Carroll coached the Patriots from 1997–99, winning his first playoff game with them before being fired. Years later, his Seahawks lost a Super Bowl to New England on Malcolm Butler’s famous goal-line interception.
“It still means something to face them,” Carroll said.
Both teams are starting over after 4-13 seasons and coaching changes. Mike Vrabel takes over in New England, stressing roster building, role accountability, and preparation. The Patriots have a younger defense and stronger support around second-year QB Drake Maye. Vrabel said his staff won’t get “too cute” in Week 1 against a veteran coach like Carroll.
New England’s big addition
WR Stefon Diggs, signed after knee surgery limited him to eight games last year, is expected to boost the Patriots’ offense. He emphasized staying focused: “Eat what’s on your plate.”
Raiders’ rookie to watch
RB Ashton Jeanty, the No. 6 overall pick and 2023 Heisman runner-up, debuts after a record-setting year at Boise State. Known for his power despite being 5-8, Jeanty said he wants to stay healthy through the season.
Raiders’ defensive return
DE Malcolm Koonce, who missed last year with a torn ACL, is back after signing a one-year deal. He ended 2022 with six sacks in his last four games and said he’s “super excited” to finally return.
