Amanda Anisimova reached her second Grand Slam final in a row by beating Naomi Osaka 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3), 6-3 in a U.S. Open semifinal that stretched close to three hours and ended at nearly 1 a.m. Friday.
The 24-year-old American, seeded No. 8, rallied after losing the first set and needed three match points to close out the win. She finished with 50 winners, out-hitting Osaka despite the four-time major champion’s 15 aces.
Anisimova will play world No. 1 and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in Saturday’s final. The two met in the Wimbledon semifinals, where Anisimova won before falling in the title match to Iga Swiatek.
Osaka, a former No. 1 returning to top form after time away from the tour, had been unbeaten in Slam quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals (13-0) until this match.
The victory marks another breakthrough for Anisimova, who just last year was ranked No. 50 after taking time off for mental health struggles. Now she’s back on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
