World Series 2023: Texas Rangers lead Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 in game 4, inch away from title.
About half an hour before Tuesday night’s Game 4 of the World Series, the Texas Rangers announced they’d deactivated two of their top players, Max Scherzer and Adolis GarcÃa, because of injuries sustained in Game 3 Monday night, ending their postseasons.
The double loss for the Rangers could have been damaging heading into an important World Series game. But about an hour after making that announcement, the Rangers were leading the Arizona Diamondbacks by 10 runs on the way to a stunning 11-7 victory at Chase Field in Phoenix.
The Rangers won Game 1 in extra innings, lost Game 2 in blowout fashion, and then rebounded to win a tight Game 3 on Monday night.
The Rangers, who are 10-0 on the road this postseason, have the opportunity to win the first World Series in team history Wednesday night in Game 5. Taking the mound will be Nathan Eovaldi vs. Zac Gallen in a rematch of the Game 1 starters.
Texas, however, will have to get it done without Scherzer and GarcÃa. They arrived at the ballpark early Tuesday to receive treatment—Scherzer for spasms in the right side of his lower back and GarcÃa for a strained left oblique sustained while swinging at a pitch during the eighth inning of Game 3. But by nearly game time, the Rangers’ medical staff determined that neither would be able to play again in the best-of-seven series.
Young added infielder/outfielder Ezequiel Duran and reliever Brock Burke to the World Series roster to replace Scherzer and GarcÃa.
GarcÃa, the MVP of the American League Championship Series, won Game 1 of the World Series at Globe Life Field for the Rangers with an 11th inning walk-off homer, his eighth of the postseason. He set a playoff record with 22 RBIs.
