Al Ahly wins record-extending 11th CAF Champions League title

CAFCL 2022-23: Al Ahly win African Champions League over defending Champions Wydad Casablanca.

Defender Mohamed Abdelmonem equalised on the night as Al Ahly of Egypt drew 1-1 at Wydad Casablanca of Morocco on Sunday to win the CAF Champions League for a record-extending 11th time.

His success erased the advantage. Seven days ago, the Cairo team took a 2-1 lead after the first leg and seven days later Yahia Attiyat Allah gave the reigning champions and secured the Cairo club a 3-2 aggregate triumph.

Wydad's loss put an end to a run of two final triumphs against Ahly, and they paid the price for focusing on maintaining their shaky advantage going into the second leg rather than looking for further goals.

  • Ahly received a record four million dollars in prize money, and Marcel Koller won the top African club championship for the first time as a Swiss coach.

Ahly won the Champions League for the third time in four seasons after beating neighbouring Egyptian team Zamalek in 2020 and South African team Kaizer Chiefs the following year.

Reda Jaadi and Zouhair el Moutaraji were replaced by attackers Mohamed Ounajem and Saifeddine Bouhra in the lineup that started the first leg in Cairo last weekend.

While Bouhra scored last Sunday after being brought on as a late substitution, veteran Ounajem was a member of the Wydad club that defeated Ahly in the 2017 championship game.

The second leg was the 13th time the African club giants had met in the Champions League with Ahly holding a 5-3 lead and four matches drawn.

Who won the 2022 CAF  Champions League title.?

Last year, Wydad AC secured the title with a 2-0 victory over Al Ahly in the final, led by Walid Regragui, who currently coaches Morocco's national team.

Al Ahly holds the record for the most Champions League titles in Africa with 11 wins, while Wydad has won the title three times.
