The 2026 Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) reached its grand finale on April 4, 2026, marking a historic milestone for the Marshall Thundering Herd. In what served as a masterclass in postseason basketball, Marshall secured its first-ever WNIT championship by delivering a commanding 66–41 victory over the Illinois State Redbirds. The title game, hosted at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, West Virginia, played out before a raucous home crowd that witnessed the culmination of a transformative era for the program.

Under the leadership of second-year head coach Kim Stephens, who has rapidly become one of the most respected tactical minds in the mid-major circuit, the Thundering Herd showcased a relentless "press and pace" style of play throughout the tournament.

Their championship run was defined by a stifling defensive identity that forced Illinois State into uncharacteristic turnovers and difficult shot selections, holding the Redbirds to one of the lowest scoring outputs in the history of the WNIT finals.
