The sport of the brain: spelling.

Dev Shah, an eighth-grader from Largo, Florida, spelled "psammophile" correctly to win the 95th national Bee and the $50,000 prize on Thursday. 

Charlotte Walsh, an eighth-grader from Arlington, Virginia, nearly pulled off the hometown victory, but could not nail "daviely" in the preceding round.. 

Shah, who attends Morgan Fitzgerald Middle School, previously competed in 2019 (tied for 51st place) and 2021 (tied for 76th place).

Winning Words: The 14-year-old from Largo's winning word was "psammophile," a noun defined as an organism that prefers or thrives in sandy areas..


In Thursday’s finals, Dev correctly spelled schistorrhachis, aegagrus, rommack and tolsester. 


More than 180 were National Spelling Bee first-timers, and 49 were returning contestants.

The prize: $50,000 cash, a commemorative medal, the coveted Scripps Cup and a lifetime of bragging rights.

Walsh's prize was $25,000 for the second-place finish, while the third-place finishers ― Shradha Rachamreddy and Surya Kapu ― each won $12,500.

Who won the 2022 National Spelling Bee?


Harini Logan, a 14-year-old from San Antonio, Texas, won the 2022 competition. The finals featured the first-ever spell-off, a 90-second tiebreaker to determine a champion. 

The rule debuted in 2021 so as to eliminate the possibility of multiple winners (eight champions were declared in 2019) and finish the competition in a timely manner.
