How does promotion and relegation work in the Championship?


Each season, the top three teams in the EFL Table advance from the Championship to the Premier League. The championship winners and runners-up advance automatically, and the final position is decided by a final at Wembley and two-legged semifinals. The Premier League relegated teams take the place of those three teams.

The 22nd, 23rd, and 24th-place clubs drop out of the Championship and are relegated to League One, which promotes another three teams to take their place.



How does the the Championship play-offs works, Format.?


The league's top two teams are automatically promoted, but the teams who place third through sixth face off for the last promotion position for that season.

There are two semi-finals, each with a home and away leg, and then a winner-takes-all final.

In one semi-final, the third-placed team plays the sixth-placed team, while in the other, the fourth- and fifth-placed teams square off.

When are the Championship 2023 play-offs, Fixtures, dates?


The 2023 Championship play-offs will take place following the conclusion of the regular season on May 8.

Play-off games usually commence a week after the regular season ends, so the semi-finals are expected to be played on the weekend of May 13/14. The semi-finals are contested over two legs - home and away.

Saturday May 13, - Sunderland vs Luton - kick-off 5.30pm BST, 12:30 p.m. ET

Sunday May 14, - Coventry vs Middlesbrough - kick-off 12pm BST, 7 a.m. ET



Semi-final second legs

Tuesday May 16, - Luton vs Sunderland - kick-off 8pm BST, 3 p.m. ET

Wednesday May 17, - Middlesbrough vs Coventry - kick-off 8pm BST, 3 p.m. ET

The 2023 Championship play-off final will be played on Saturday May 27, 2023. The game usually has an afternoon kick-off time - 4:45pm BST - 11:45 a.m. ET.
