NFL Playoffs 2022: Injuried Mahomes leads Chiefs, cruise past Jaguars, advance to fifth consecutive AFC Championship Game
The Andy Reid's squad' Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Doug Pederson and the Jacksonville Jaguars, 27-20, to earn a spot in the AFC Championship Game for the fifth consecutive year.
After taking a low hit near the end of the first quarter, Patrick-Mahomes injured his ankle. He missed one drive, but he recovered from the discomfort and came back to help Kansas City win in the second half.
Star tight end Travis-Kelce scored twice to give the Chiefs a 17-10 lead at the half. His 10 catches in the opening period tied the mark for the most catches in the opening period of a playoff game since 1991.
The top tight end in the NFL recorded a final total of 14 receptions for 98 yards and two touchdowns.
In the fourth quarter, Travis-Etienne scored a 4-yard touchdown to cut the Jaguars' lead to three points.
However, the injured Mahomes then directed a 10-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, hitting Marquez-Valdes-Scantling for a 6-yard score to restore the lead to ten points.
The Jaguars then lost control of the ball on consecutive possessions, allowing the Chiefs to end the game early.
The Chiefs will become the third team to reach five consecutive conference championship games, joining the Oakland-Raiders from the 1970s and the 2011–18 New England Patriots,
As Mahomes becomes the first quarterback in NFL history to do so before turning 30.
With the win, Andy Reid is now the only coach with 20 postseason victories, trailing only Tom Landry (20) and Bill Belichick (31) in that regard.
