French-bred six-year-old, who started at 18-1, seized the lead 300 metres from the finish and was able to hold off Geelong Cup winner Emissary, looked the winner in the scary eyes at home to finish fourth behind Gold Trip.



The UK-bases horse, ridden by Mark Zahra, and trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, finalised the race strongly and rapidly to come out on top to wins, beating out Geelong Cup winner Emissary and race favourite Deauville Legend, who finished fourth.

  •  It was Zahra's first triumph, In the renowned race, which has been held on the first Tuesday of November since 1876.

For Zahra, who placed second in the Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup, it was an incredible moment. Due to her suspension, Zahra was unable to ride Verry Elegant, the 2021 Melbourne Cup victor.


Although Gold Trip has placed in the top five at Group 1 level six times, including a fourth in the prestigious Arc de Triomphe, this was only the horse's second victory from 16 starts. Gold Trip was paid $19.40 for the victory and $5.80 for second place.

  • The horse become the first in 99 years to win the Melbourne Cup with just one previous race win.
