Tunisia stun Champion France but Eliminated in the WorldCup

FIFA World Cup 2022: Khazri make winner score, Tunisia upsets France 1-0, but knockout in WC, player ratings.

Already Eliminated Tunisia makes fruitless comeback by beating World Cup winners France 1-0 but it wasn't enough to qualify in a dramatic finale that saw Antoine Griezmann's goal ruled out by a late VAR review.

Les Blues had advanced to the knockout rounds when Didier Deschamps made nine changes, but the team lacked cohesion and rhythm.

Even though Tunisia was the superior team, Nader Ghandri's flicked goal from a free kick was disallowed in the opening period.

However, they did manage to score a crucial goal in the second half when Wahbi Khazri was given free reign to charge into the penalty area and calmly finish to ignite wild celebrations.

In an attempt to turn things around, France substituted in players like Kylian Mbappe and Antonie Griezmann, but they were unable to alter their disjointed performance.

The Atletico striker did score, but the goal was overturned by a thorough VAR review.

France 0- 1 Tunisia, Opta Key Stats.

Wahbi Khazri is the first African player in World Cup history to score in three consecutive starts, while he has been directly involved in each of Tunisia's last five goals at the tournament (3 goals, 2 assists).

France were beaten in a World Cup match for the first time since the 2014 quarter-final (0-1 v Germany), ending a run of nine games without defeat (W8 D1). They have now gone without a win in their final group match in each of the last four World Cup tournaments (D2 L2), while failing to score in the last three.

Tunisia only conceded one goal in their three games at the 2022 World Cup; the joint-fewest by an African team across a full group stage in the tournament, along with Cameroon in 1982 and Morocco in 1986.

This was just the third time that the reigning World Cup champions were beaten by African opposition at the tournament, with two of the three occurring with France as the holders - Cameroon 1-0 Argentina in 1990, Senegal 1-0 France in 2002 and Tunisia 1-0 France in 2022.
