Valencia was fouled in the box by Qatari goalkeeper Saad al-Sheeb after only 15 minutes of play, and the referee immediately signalled to the spot.

Valencia became Ecuador's all-time leading World Cup goal scorer by converting the penalty kick to the right of the goalkeeper.

Valencia scored again after fifteen minutes, extending Ecuador's lead with a header from a pass that came from the right side of the box well outside the area.

The hosts relaxed as halftime drew near, but they were unable to translate their greater comfort into many significant offensive plays after the break.

As Qatar dominated possession in the second half, Ecuador was compelled to maintain a compact defensive structure.
