Cheshmi’s stoppage-time goal help Iran win over 10-man Wales

FIFA World Cup 2022: Cheshmi’s stoppage-time goal help Iran win 2-0 over 10-man Wales, Player Ratings.

Ten-man Dragons’ hopes of reaching the knockout stage of their first World Cup in 64 years suffered a major walkout, Rouzbeh Cheshmi scored in the stoppage time, as Robert Page’s side were beaten 2-0 by Iran’s late, late drama.

When starter Wayne Hennessey was dismissed in the 86th minute, Wales backup goalkeeper Danny-Ward was forced into action and just missed Cheshmi's strike from outside the box with a diving save.

Moments later, Ramin Rezaeian added a second goal, and Iran erupted in jubilant celebration as some of the Welsh players fell to the ground in shock.

In the 86th minute, Hennessy was dismissed for a high challenge on Mehdi Taremi.

The Welsh team started slowly after a 1-1 draw with the United States in their Group B opener, but Gareth-Bale made his 110th appearance for Wales, the most for the national team overall.

Iran performed better against Wales after losing to England 6-2 in the group's opening match to finish last.
