Kylian Mbappe scored two goals and put defending champion France became the first team to qualify for the last 16 round of the World Cup with a 2-1 late win over Denmark on Saturday at the Stadium 974 in Doha,

After scoring in France's 4-1 victory over Australia on the opening night, Mbappe scored the first of his two poacher-like goals on 61 minutes by converting a cross from Theo Hernandez.

Denmark had won the two previous meetings with France in the Nations League but in Qatar put in a lethargic opening matchday showing in their 0-0 with Tunisia.

Despite falling behind, Denmark didn't panic, and seven minutes later, Andreas Christensen headed in a corner from Christian Eriksen as the French stumbled defensively, bringing the score even.

Both teams had late-game opportunities to win it, but Mbappe provided the game-winning moment, once more displaying his razor-sharp predatory skills to head in an Antoine Griezmann cross with four minutes left.

World Cup 2022 Fantasy football: France vs Denmark, Key Opta Stats

Mbappé became just the second player to score in three successive World Cup games for France after Just Fontaine, who scored in six successive appearances at the 1958 edition.

Mbappé scored his 30th and 31st goals for France, netting 14 goals in his last 12 appearances for the national team. Indeed, he's had more shots than any other player at the World Cup so far (13), with three of his five on target resulting in a goal.

France are now just the fifth reigning champions at the World Cup to win their opening two games at the tournament after Italy in 1938, Uruguay in 1954, Brazil in 1998 and Brazil in 2006.

Each of Denmark's last seven goals scored at the World Cup have come via a different goalscorer, a run that began at the 2010 edition (Bendtner, Rommedahl, Tomasson, Poulsen, Eriksen, Zanka and Christensen).
