In the absence of Injured Star Karim Benzema, Kylian Mbappe scored one and set up the second of Olivier Giroud’s two goals to help the defending champions beat Australia 4-1.



  • Oliver Giroud has equaled the Thierry Henry’s national record of France All-Time Top Scores with 51 goals with a header from Mbappe cross in the 71st minute.


Just before that goal, Mbappe headed in a cross from the right by Ousmane Dembele to begin this World Cup the same way he ended the last: with a goal.

In a new celebration, he knelt down with one hand behind his back and one finger on his forehead.



In the ninth minute, Australia took the lead when winger Mathew Leckie's cross was turned in by Craig Goodwin.

Adrien Rabiot, a midfielder for France, scored the first goal for Giroud shortly after tying the score with a strong header in the 27th minute.

The Socceroos were pumped up and the green-and-gold Aussie fans were loving it.

The Aussies also mocked with Mabppe with chants of “Who are ya? Who are ya?” when he lost the ball control.

Australia have not won a World Cup game since 2010, and have just two wins in their last 13 World Cup games. The Socceroos have not scored a non-penalty World Cup goal since Tim Cahill in 2014.

Kylian Mbappe is second amongst players in the Big 5 European leagues with 19 goals across all competitions, behind only Erling Haaland's 23.

No team has repeated as World Cup champion since Brazil in 1962.
