Kramaric brace Croatia downs Canada eliminate from WorldCup

FIFA World Cup 2022: Kramaric scores double, Canada’s World Cup hopes end after loss, as Croatia progress for last 16, Player ratings.




Alphonso Davies scored Canada's first ever World Cup goal, it was not enough to revoke them being leftout of the Qatar 2022 following a defeat by Croatia.



Andrej Kramaric scored a pair of goals, Majer stoppage time netted score as the Croatia crushed Canada’s hopes of advancing knockout stage at its first World Cup in 36 years with a 4-1 victory on Sunday.



The 2018 Runners-up Zlatko Dalic side, Chequered Ones were held to a goalless draw by Morocco in their opening fixture, while the Alphonso Davies' missed the first-half penalty John Herdman side Canucks succumbed to the Red Devils of Belgium in a 1-0 loss.



After just 67 seconds, John Herdman's underdogs scored from the opening attack thanks to a towering header from Davies, who darted into the box and effectively converted from Tajon Buchanan's cross.

Despite being behind, Croatia did not give up and continued to create opportunities, with striker Andrej Kramaric having a goal disallowed for offside.



However, after Ivan Perisic's pass led to an equalising angle shot from the former Leicester player, they went ahead thanks to goals from Marko Livaja and Ivan Perisic.

In the second half, Milan Borjan made a fine save to deny Kramaric, and at the other end, Dominik Livakovic expertly deflected a long-range curler from Jonathan David.



Frontman Kramaric of Hoffenheim scored his second goal of the game by calmly converting into the far corner, and substitute Lovro Majer scored in stoppage time to seal the victory.

Croatia have avoided defeat in four of the last five World Cup games in which they conceded the first goal (W2 D2), with all five games coming since the start of the 2018 edition.

Canada have lost all five of their World Cup matches to date - only El Salvador (6) have played more games in the competition while losing on each occasion.

Ivan Perišić has been directly involved in 16 goals at World Cups and EUROs combined (9 goals, 7 assists), six more than any other Croatia player.

Atiba Hutchinson made his 100th appearance for Canada in this match, becoming the first player to reach this milestone for the men's team.

Canada was also eliminated in the group stage of the team’s only other World Cup appearance in 1986.
Canada became the first side since Denmark against Brazil in 1998 to lose a match at the World Cup having scored inside two minutes in that game. 
Andrej Kramaric became the second player to score a brace for Croatia at the World Cup after Mario Mandžukić in 2014 against Cameroon.
