Bale's 128th-minute goal helps LAFC win First MLS Cup

MLS Cup 2022: Los Angeles FC beat Philadelphia Union on penalties to win the First-Ever MLS Cup.

Gareth Bale scored a last-minute equaliser in extra time before Los Angeles FC beat Philadelphia Union on penalties to win the First-Ever MLS Cup.

Los Angeles FC's first player and longtime captain had no clue how exhausted he and everyone else involved in the most dramatic championship game in Major League Soccer's 27-year history would be.

Bale tied the game 3-3 with a dramatic header in the eighth minute of extra-time stoppage time, backup goalkeeper John McCarthy stopped two Philadelphia shots in the shootout, and LAFC won its first MLS Cup 3-0 on penalty kicks Saturday.

LAFC took the lead in the first half on a deflected free-kick from Kellyn Acosta.

Midway through the second half, Daniel Gazdag equalised by deflecting a low shot from distance and firing in from close range.

With a strike in the 83rd minute, Jesus Murillo thought he had won it in normal time for LAFC, but Jack Elliott equalised two minutes later.

During extra time, LAFC goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau was sent off for a foul.

However, with nine minutes of added time remaining, Bale's dramatic 128th-minute equaliser sent the game to penalties, where substitute goalkeeper John McCarthy made two crucial saves before Ilie Sanchez scored the game-winning penalty for LAFC.
