London Marathon, annual 26.2-mile (42.2-km) footrace through the streets of London that takes place in April. The event was first held in 1981 and is one of the world’s six major marathons, along with the Berlin, Boston, Chicago, New York City, and Tokyo races.



Beginning at Greenwich Park and Blackheath, the London Marathon route passes through a number of inner boroughs south of the Thames before crossing the river at the Tower Bridge. Afterward, it travels east and circles the Isle of Dogs before making a U-turn and coming to an end on the Mall close to Buckingham Palace.


The London Marathon has been won by 20 runners representing the UK a total of 40 times.

Who were the First London Marathon Winners in 1981?


Inge Simonsen of Norway and Dick Beardsley of the United States tied for first place (Winners) in the inaugural London Marathon in 1981. The two runners finished in 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 48 seconds while holding hands. Only once have two racers shared the title of London Marathon champion.

Mexico’s Dionicio Cerón, Portugal’s Antonio Pinto, and Kenya’s Martin Lel share the record for most men’s victories, three, and Ingrid Kristiansen of Norway holds the women’s record with four marathon wins.

The fast course of the London Marathon is very well known. The women's course record from  Peres Jepchirchir (KEN) in 2024 (2:16:16), the mixed marathon world record from Britain's Paula Radcliffe from 2003 (2:15:25), and Kipchoge's course record from 2019 (2:02:37) are still in effect.


London marathon: Consecutive victories in Elite races,


Three athletes have won three consecutive London Marathon titles.

They are men’s winner Mexico’s Dionicio Ceron (1994-96), Germany’s Katrin Dorre-Heinig (1992-94) in the women’s race and David Weir who won the men’s wheelchair race between 2006-08.

Women’s wheelchair winners Francesca Porcellato (2003-06) of Italy and USA’s Tatyana McFadden (2013-2016) are the only two athletes who have won the London Marathon four times in a row.
