Kelvin Kiptum and Sifan Hassan Win 2023 London Marathon

London Marathon 2023 Results: Kelvin Kiptum misses world record and Sifan Hassan win another title in elite races.




In Men's Elite race Kenyan Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum won the London Marathon with the second-fastest time in history, minutes after Sifan Hassan won the women’s Elite race to add to her legendary distance-running career.

Following a surge just before 19 miles, Kiptum won the men's race in 2 hours, 1 minute, and 25 seconds. Only Eliud Kipchoge's 2:01:09 world record from the Berlin Marathon in September of last year is quicker.


The 23-year-old Kiptum also won his first marathon in Valencia, Spain, in December in 2:01:53, moving up to third place all-time in the process.


He surpassed Kipchoge's race record of 2:02:37 from 2019 on Sunday, overtook Ethiopian legend Kenenisa Bekele as the second fastest person in history, and finished 2 minutes, 58 seconds ahead of Kenyan runner-up Geoffrey Kamworor.








On a soggy morning, Hassan, a Dutchwoman of Ethiopian descent, won a sprint finish in 2:18:33. Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya followed four seconds later by the Ethiopian Alemu Megertu.


Brigid Kosgei of Kenya, who holds the world record, walked out after less than a mile and claimed to have suffered a hamstring injury two weeks ago.


Hassan possesses probably unmatched range: big victories at the marathon, 1500 metres (2019 Worlds), 5000 metres (Tokyo Olympics), and 10,000 metres (2019 Worlds and Tokyo Olympics). She holds the mile world record with a time of 4:12.33.

The TOP American Olympic contenders did not compete in London. Both Keira D'Amato and Emily Sisson, who each broke the American record last year, entered London last month before withdrawing due to minor ailments.

There is a total prize fund of $313,000 up for grabs, with the men's and women's winners getting $55,000 each and cash prizes for the top 10 finishers.

In the wheelchair races the prizes for both the men’s and women’s race have increased by $10,000 this year – from from $35,000 to $45,000.

Earlier, Marcel Hug and Catherine Debrunner set new course records as they completed an all-Swiss sweep of the Men's & Women's wheelchair titles.
