Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe made history at the 2026 London Marathon on Sunday by becoming the first man ever to run an official marathon under two hours.
Sawe clocked a stunning 1:59:30 to win and shatter the world record by 65 seconds. Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha finished second in 1:59:41 in his marathon debut, while Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo took third in 2:00:28.
In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa successfully defended her title and broke her own women’s-only world record with a time of 2:15:41.
She edged out Kenya’s Hellen Obiri (2:15:53) and Joyciline Jepkosgei (2:15:55) in a thrilling finish.
Switzerland dominated the wheelchair events, with Marcel Hug winning his sixth straight men’s title in 1:24:13, and Catherine Debrunner defending her women’s crown in 1:38:29, just five seconds ahead of America’s Tatyana McFadden.
