The sport's record-holder for winning a ranking event 39 times, Ronnie O'Sullivan enters his 31st season as a professional as the world champion and No. 1 in the world. With 31 triumphs since they both turned professional in 1992, 

O'Sullivan  is three victories ahead of Stephen Hendry, who has also won the Crucible seven times, and eight victories ahead of third-place John Higgins. Steve Davis, a six-time world champion, is in fourth place with a score of 28.

John Spencer of England defeated Canadian Cliff Thorburn, the 1980 champion, 25-21 in the World Championship final to become the first ratified winner of a ranking title.

When Ronnie O'Sullivan defeated Stephen Hendry 10-6 to win the 1993 UK Championship at the age of 17 years and 358 days, he set a record for the youngest person to win a ranking title.

With his sixth title since 2001 and an 18-14 triumph over Judd Trump in 2022, O'Sullivan is also the oldest world champion of the modern era. He did this at the age of 46 years and 148 days.

With his 10-5 victory over Jimmy White at the Professional Players Tournament in 1982, the Welsh legend still holds the record for the oldest ranking title winner. He was 50 years and 14 days old at the time.
