Chinese, Yibing historic win a first Grand Slam match in 63 years

WU Yibing beat Nikoloz Basilashvili won men's singles match, first Chinese man to win 2022 US Open singles match since 1935.






  • Qualifier Wu Yibing made history as he sailed into the U.S. Open second round for the first time, 1st chinese to came in New York since 1935.



The rising Chinese player swept past 31st seed Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 in his Grand Slam main draw debut and extended his winning streak this season to 14 matches.



Wu will next face Portuguese qualifier Nuno Borges, who eliminated local wildcard Ben Shelton.



Wu Yibing became the first Chinese man to win a singles match at a Grand Slam in 63 years - since Fu Chi Mei at Wimbledon in 1959 - with his 6-3 6-4 6-0 victory over Georgia's world number 35 Nikoloz Basilashvili.




Wu, ranked 174 and who came through qualifying, is also the first Chinese man to win a US Open singles match since Guy Cheng in 1935.
