23 Cities, 3 countries trying to pick 2026 World Cup host rights

FIFA World Cup 2026: Plans to gives hosting right at the end of 2021.

FIFA has set a new deadline to formalize North American host cities for the 2026 World Cup—If the coronavirus pandemic situation is not out of control.

The 23 nominee cities are expected to have to be cut to 16. FIFA said they should be informed by the end of the year.

The pre-pandemic timeline called for cities staging the first 48-team World Cup—probably 10 in the United States and three in Canada and Mexico—to be chosen early this year. The current deadline will focus on the willingness of FIFA officials to make inspection trips to 17 cities in the United States and three in Canada and Mexico.

The first 48-team World Cup would have 80 games instead of the existing 64.

The plan was to play 60 games in the United States and 10 each in Canada and Mexico when the tournament was won in 2018.
