Who is the highest-paid MLB designated hitter? Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani Cashes the bank

Two-way star Shohei Ohtani signed a record-setting $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in December − by far the richest in baseball history.

It’s worth nearly twice as much as New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge’s nine-year, $360 million contract a year ago, the previous record for a free agent deal. His average annual value of $70 million is more than $25 million than any other player in baseball and more than the entire Oakland Athletics's expected payroll ($61 million).

But for book-keeping's sake, Ohtani will only be paid $2 million per year for the next 10 years, with $680 million in deferred payments in installments from 2034 to 2043.

For this exercise, Ohtani is not listed among the top starting pitchers because he is not expected to pitch in 2024 as he recovering from elbow surgery.
