The 129th Boston Marathon 2025 is set to be run on Monday, April 21, Patriots' Day. Not to be confused with the New England Patriots, this is a holiday to commemorate the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the Revolutionary War.



The top ten competitors in the Open and Wheelchair divisions share a sizeable prize fund.

In the open division, the winning man and woman take home $150,000 apiece.

In the wheelchair class, the winning male and female receive $50,000 apiece.

The Boston Marathon is offering five- to six-figure rewards for the top finishers in the competition, Additionally, anyone who breaks the course record in the open and wheelchair categories of the Boston Marathon receives a bonus of $50,000.

Who won the Boston Marathon in 2025?



At the 129th Boston Marathon on Monday, Kenya's John Korir and Sharon Lokedi won the men's and women's elite races, respectively. 

In the wheelchair races, Marcel Hug of Switzerland defended his title and American Susannah Scaroni earned her second win.

Lokedi broke the previous women's course record, which was set in 2014, by about a minute-and-a-half. The second and third place women finishers also beat the prior record, which was 2:19:59. Breaking the record comes with a $50,000 bonus prize for Lokedi.

Korir joins his brother, Wesley, as a Boston Marathon winner. Wesley Korir won with a time of 2:12:40 in 2012.

Boston Marathon 2025 prize money breakdown: How much do the winners get for every division?




In the open division, the first-place prize is $150,000, the second-place prize is $75,000 and the third-place runner receives $40,000. 

In the wheelchair division for T53/54/34 competitors, the first-, second-, and third-place prizes are valued at $50,000, $30,000 and $15,000.  

To get the $50,000 course record bonus, open division male runners will have to beat Geoffrey Mutai’s record time of 2 hours, 3 minutes and 2 seconds set in 2011.


The Boston Marathon is the first Abbott World Marathon Major event to offer equal $50,000 course record bonuses across open and wheelchair divisions.

In the T51-T52 wheelchair category, the prize amounts are smaller but remain meaningful. The first-place athlete will receive $1,500, followed by $750 for second place and $500 for third.






Masters Division


Athletes in the Masters Division, which includes runners aged 40 and over, will also be rewarded. The top finisher in this category earns $5,000. Second place is awarded $2,500, while third place will receive $1,500. Though more modest than the Open Division, these awards still acknowledge the achievements of older elite runners.
