On Saturday night, in front of a record-breaking 53,886 spectators at Optus Stadium, the defending champions successfully chased down the 176-run target with only four balls remaining in a thrilling match.

After deciding to bat, the fifth-ranked Heat put up a respectable 175-7 from 20 overs, but the defending champions proved to be too strong and advanced to 178-5 with four balls remaining. The Heat, who played admirably throughout the finals series, were ranked fifth overall.

Connolly, playing in just his fourth Twenty20 match, walked to the crease and took charge of the chase when his team needed 39 runs from 19 deliveries. Living dangerously, he smashed two enormous sixes and a four in his 11-ball blitz.

Ashton-Turner, the captain, pulled off a well-known rescue act when his team was at 67-3 after 10 overs and needed to score at a run rate of over 10, smashing five fours and two sixes to keep the game close.

Heazlett and captain Jimmy Peirson (3) used the batting powerplay aggressively in the 13th over, but it backfired when they swiped Jason Behrendorff (2-26) to short fine leg.

Max-Bryant skied Matt Kelly (2-37) to keeper Josh-Inglis after making 31 off of 14 balls. One ball later, as Neser attempted to make a golden duck, the same outcome awaited him.

Both teams came into the game lacking star power as a result of injuries and international call-ups.
