Kenyans sweep, Chebet and Lokedi wins the 2022 New York City Marathon in men's & Women's races in debuts.





Evans Chebet and Sharon Lokedi of Kenya won the New York City Marathons 2022 races, both making a splash in their debuts., as both overcame the extreme heat and humidity on Sunday after Brazilian Daniel Do Nascimento collapsed during the race.

The 2022 TCS New York City Marathon is happening Sunday. More than 50,000 runners will make their way through all five boroughs on the 26.2-mile course.

  • The 2022 New York City marathon race was run with a alarming temperatures in the 70s making it one of the hottest in race history since the NYC marathon was moved to November in 1986.

21 miles into the NYC elite men's race, Daniel Do Nascimento, who had been in the lead the entire time, passed out. Chebet beat second-place finisher Shura Kitata of Ethiopia by 13 seconds as she crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 8 minutes, and 41 seconds.

On an unusually warm day, Do Nascimento got off to a quick start and maintained a lead of nearly 2 minutes for the majority of the race. Before returning to Manhattan, the Brazilian passed out at Mile 21 and received medical attention. He had stopped for a quick 20-second bathroom break a few miles back.


  • The chase pack was pursuing Do Nascimento when Chebet, 33, broke away as they crossed the bridge into Manhattan for the first time.

Chebet took the lead after Do Nascimento's defeat and was never challenged again. Earlier this year, Chebet won the Boston Marathon.

In the NYC women's elite race, Lokedi finished her first marathon in 2 hours, 23 minutes, and 23 seconds, just ahead of Israeli runner Lonah Chemtai Salpeter.

Before pulling ahead of Chemtai Salpeter in the final two miles to win by seven seconds and place about 50 seconds off the course record, the 28-year-old Lokedi was in a close race.

The marathon is at full capacity for the first time since 2019. It was canceled in 2020 and downsized in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The men's wheelchair race saw Marcel Hug of Switzerland win for the fifth time beats the Daniel Romanchuk of Illinois, equalzing Kurt Fearnley for the most victories in that competition's history.

Hug beat the previous record of 1:29.22 set by Fearnley of Australia in 2006 by completing the 26.2-mile course in just 1:25.26.

In the women's wheelchair race, Susannah Scaroni also beat the previous time by coming in first in 1:42.43. The previous record, held by Tatyana McFadden, was bettered by 21 seconds with that time.

Scaroni, a 31-year-old Illinois native who outran the field early on and received the bonus money for breaking the course record, pulled away from the competition. After placing third in 2019, Scaroni won the Chicago Marathon last month and triumphed in New York for the first time.
