US Open 2022: Matt Fitzpatrick holds off Scottie Scheffler, Zalatoris to snatch maiden major title at Brookline Club, stats
- Matt Fitzpatrick came through a final-round tussle with Will Zalatoris and world No 1 Scottie Scheffler to secure a first major title with a thrilling victory at the US Open in Brookylen.
England's Matt Fitzpatrick has won again at The Country Club, this time with the most prestigious of golf trophies.
Fitzpatrick took control of a tight contest at Brookline with a terrific break and even better shot on the 15th hole for a two-shot swing.
From a fairway bunker on the 18th, he was just as clutch, setting up par for a 2-under 68.
Fitzpatrick finished with a 6-under-par total of 274.
Will Zalatoris, who had shown incredible resilience in the face of adversity, went to his knees when his 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th just slid by the left side of the cup.
Zalatoris, who finished with a 69, finished second for the second time in a major.
Scottie Scheffler, the Masters champion, never recovered from back-to-back bogeys on the back nine, which cost him the lead.
On the 18th, he had a 25-foot birdie opportunity that he barely missed, leaving him one behind with a 67.
