Finland Defeats Switzerland in Overtime to Win 2026 IIHF World Championship Title

Finland captured the 2026 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship crown on Sunday, defeating host nation Switzerland 1-0 in overtime in a dramatic gold-medal game in Zurich.

The championship-winning goal came 10:42 into overtime when Konsta Helenius found the back of the net, assisted by Anton Lundell and Mikko Lehtonen, silencing a sold-out Swiss crowd and securing Finland's first world title since 2022.

The final was a tense defensive battle from start to finish. Finland thought it had opened the scoring in the first period when Anton Lundell put the puck in the net, but the goal was disallowed for a high stick after review.

Swiss goaltender Leonardo Genoni and Finnish netminder Justus Annunen delivered outstanding performances throughout regulation, keeping the game scoreless through all three periods. Switzerland generated several quality chances, including a lengthy five-on-three power play in the second period, but Annunen stood firm.

The deadlock continued into the third period, where both teams struggled to create sustained offensive pressure. Swiss captain Roman Josi and forward Pius Suter each came close late in regulation, but Finland's defense and goaltending held strong.

Overtime nearly ended seconds after it began when Jesse Puljujärvi struck the post for Finland. However, Helenius eventually broke through midway through the extra period, ending one of the lowest-scoring championship games in tournament history.

The victory gives Finland another major international title, while Switzerland's wait for a first IIHF World Championship gold medal continues. The Swiss have now suffered defeat in the final for the third consecutive tournament.

"It's very frustrating," Swiss alternate captain Nico Hischier said after the game. "We've been so close so many times."

Despite the disappointment, Switzerland once again proved it belongs among the world's elite hockey nations, reaching another final in front of passionate home supporters.
