Angel Reese Shatters Record as Fastest to 1,000 Rebounds in WNBA History

Angel Reese Makes WNBA History: Fastest Player Ever to Reach 1,000 Career Rebounds

Byline: Updated June 21, 2026Angel Reese continues to rewrite the WNBA record books. The Atlanta Dream forward became the fastest player in league history to reach 1,000 career rebounds, achieving the milestone in just 79 games.Reese grabbed her 1,000th rebound at the 4:29 mark of the third quarter in Atlanta’s 113-96 victory over the Indiana Fever on June 20, 2026. She secured an offensive rebound off a miss by Allisha Gray and converted it into a basket, capping off a historic night. This mark surpasses the previous record held by Tina Charles, who needed 89 games to reach 1,000 rebounds.

Reese Reflects on the Milestone

After the game, Reese highlighted the difficulty and importance of consistent rebounding:

  • “I think people don’t realize, rebounding is harder than you think. Defensive rebounds are a little bit easier, but going in and crashing every single time to get second-chance opportunities on the offensive end… You can look statistically, but not just from my shots but from my teammates, and it gives us more points. It gives us more opportunities.”

Reese leads the WNBA in rebounds per game and offensive rebounds per game (5.9) this season. She is currently averaging a double-double for the third straight season: 15.1 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists through 14 games in 2026. Her ten double-doubles this season tie her for the league lead.

Historic Start to Career

Reese’s rebounding dominance is nothing new. Earlier in the 2026 season, she:

Reached 900 career rebounds in just 71 games — the fastest in WNBA history.

Set a new WNBA record with 57 double-doubles through her first 75 career games (as of June 9).

Scored her 1,000th career point on June 2 against the Connecticut Sun.

Her 57 double-doubles through 75 games rank second all-time across the WNBA and NBA in the last 40 years, trailing only Shaquille O’Neal (63).

Development Under Coach Karl Smesko

Reese credited Atlanta Dream head coach Karl Smesko for elevating her game after she was traded to the team in the offseason.

  • “He’s very intentional with my development, even with my rebounding,” Reese said. “He talks about the Sacramento Monarchs and how they were one of the best rebounding teams in history. He wants me to be a part of that and our team to be that too.”

The former seventh overall pick (2024) spent her first two seasons with the Chicago Sky, where she set a franchise single-season rebounding record with 446 boards as a rookie and became the fastest player to reach 20 double-doubles in a season.

Why This Matters

Angel Reese’s elite rebounding and consistent double-double production have made her one of the most dominant bigs in the WNBA. Her ability to crash the offensive glass creates extra possessions and scoring opportunities, giving her team a significant edge.Fans and analysts continue to watch as the 24-year-old star builds what could become a Hall of Fame career.
