The NBL salary cap is a "soft cap" system designed to promote league parity while allowing wealthier clubs to spend more on talent by paying a financial penalty. 


What happens when NBL teams spends over the Salary Cap?

Unlike a "hard cap" (where spending over the limit is strictly forbidden), NBL teams can exceed the $2.17M cap. However, doing so triggers a luxury tax, also known as an equalisation subsidy, which is redistributed to teams that struggle to meet the cap.

A Marquee Player is a high-level Australian or New Zealand talent who typically commands a significant salary. Each team can have at least one Marquee Player, with their cap value fixed regardless of actual earnings. Teams can also convert import spots into additional Marquee slots, with each extra spot carrying a higher cap charge. In total, teams can have up to four combined marquee and import players.

The league’s minimum salary has also increased, rising 3% from $79,758.05 to $82,948.37, with a further jump to $88,754.76 already set for the 2027-2028 season.


NBL lowest-paid players: five-player maximum salary

Another key mechanism remains the five-player salary maximum. This rule caps the combined value of a team’s five lowest-paid players. It has increased from $729,212.16 last season to $780,257.01 for 2026–2027.

Development Player (DP) contracts have also seen a boost, with the minimum rising from $22,495.64 to $24,070.33.
