London Marathon 2027: Two-Day Event Planned with 100,000 Runners

London Marathon 2027 Two-Day Plans: What Runners Need to Know

London Marathon Eyes Two-Day Format in 2027

Organisers of the London Marathon are exploring the possibility of staging the event over two days for the first time in 2027 to accommodate significantly more runners.

Background and Surging Demand

The proposal comes after an unprecedented surge in applications. A record 1.1 million people applied for the 2026 London Marathon via the public ballot — a 36% increase on the previous year. The 2025 edition already set a Guinness World Record with 56,640 finishers (from 57,449 starters), making it the largest marathon in history by number of finishers.Despite the high numbers, only a small fraction of applicants (roughly 5% based on recent starter figures) get the chance to run the iconic course each year.

Proposed Two-Day Event

According to reports, talks are at an advanced stage for a one-off “Double London Marathon” in 2027.The event could allow up to 100,000 amateur runners across the weekend.

Approximately 50,000 runners would take part each day.

Potential dates: Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 April 2027.

Elite men’s and women’s races may also be split across the two days.

The idea is being internally referred to as the “Double London Marathon” and aims to create a full running festival atmosphere.

Official Statements

A spokesperson for London Marathon Events said:

“The London Marathon is the world’s most popular marathon, and we are continually exploring innovative ways to enable more people to take part, while delivering positive benefits for London.

Together with our partners and stakeholders, we are looking at the intention for the 2027 London Marathon to take place across two days.

Our immediate focus is on delivering an incredible 2026 London Marathon on Sunday, 26 April.”

A spokesperson for Mayor of London Sadiq Khan added that London is the sporting capital of the world and the Mayor looks forward to working with organisers on whether a two-day event is possible.

Potential Benefits

Dramatically increase participation numbers.

Boost charity fundraising (potentially raising over £100 million in one weekend).

Turn the weekend into a major celebration of running at all levels.

Challenges and Current Status

No formal approval has been given yet. Significant logistical issues remain, including:Closing major London roads for an entire weekend

Managing traffic, public transport, and resident impact

Policing and crowd control

The 2026 London Marathon will still run as a traditional single-day event on Sunday, 26 April 2026.This remains a proposal under discussion, but if approved, it would mark a major evolution for one of the world’s biggest mass-participation sporting events.Would you like me to adjust any section, make it shorter, or add more details?
