USA v Canada Score, Highlights, Men's Hockey Gold Medal Game

USA v Canada, Score, Highlights, Team USA wins the 2026 Men's Hockey Gold Medal Games

The men's ice hockey gold medal game between Team USA and Team Canada is the marquee finale of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, taking place on Sunday, February 22, 2026 — the last full day of competition before the closing ceremony.

Forty-six years to the day after a bunch of unheralded amateurs stunned the heavily favored Soviet Union en route to winning Olympic gold, the U.S. men’s hockey team engineered another epic victory. The Americans won a battle of the sport’s superpowers on Sunday, toppling longtime nemesis Canada 2-1 in overtime to win their country’s first Olympic gold in men’s hockey since the famed 1980 “Miracle on Ice.”

Jack Hughes scored the decisive goal, ripping a shot past Jordan Binnington less than three minutes into 3-versus-3 overtime.

The Americans only forced overtime because Connor Hellebuyck withstood target practice from Canada’s all-world forward corps. Hellebuyck made incredible save after incredible save against constant Canadian pressure, turning away 41 of the 42 shots he faced.

The win happened 46 years to the day after the USA upset the Soviet Union at the 1980 Olympics on the way to the Americans’ last gold medal.

Matt Boldy scored in the first period for the USA, splitting the defensive pair of Cale Makar and Devon Toews. Makar tied it for Canada late in the second period.

Johnny Gaudreau’s jersey to applause everywhere

It is bananas in here after Jack Hughes’ winning goal.

Americans are losing their minds and Canadians are too stunned to leave. Jack Hughes is skating around with a flag and has been absolutely bum rushed on the boards.

CNN - Just over a year ago, Canada defeated Team USA 3-2 in overtime to win the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off Championship game in Boston.

Canadian Connor McDavid scored the game winning goal. McDavid is in his 11th NHL season, but this is his first Olympics.

The 2010 gold medal game between the USA and Canada also went to overtime – that time, it was after a 2-2 draw following 60 minutes of action.

How does Olympic overtime hockey work?

Overtime in a gold medal game is a little different.

Teams will play 3-on-3 sudden death hockey for 20 minutes with the next goal – fittingly called the golden goal – winning this final.

Celebrini misses in front of the net  in the Last Mint

Canada had an opportunity to score on the power play with Macklin Celebrini getting the puck in front of the net. However, he fired wide of Connor Hellebuyck and the U.S. will kill Canada’s one-minute power play advantage.

Crucial penalty on USA changes the game

Team USA’s Jack Hughes picks up a penalty and the power-play advantage for the US is snuffed out as he goes into the box.

After no goals in the short 4-on-4 period, it’s a Canadian power play that on which they’ll look to score the winner.

Referees miss too many men on the ice penalty on Team USA

Canada fans will complain that the U.S. should have been called for too many men on the ice during a line change. NBC’s replay showed Team USA had seven players on the ice while Jack Hughes handled the puck along the boards.

Hellebuyck saves yet another shot and US gets a lucky break

Hellebuyck will not let down.

Canada has 39 shots on goal and it seems like the puck is constantly in Team USA’s territory, but Hellebuyck hasn’t let any of these close shots slide.

Nathan MacKinnon misses huge chance for Canada

How many chances are Canada going to pass up on here?

This time it’s Nathan MacKinnon who misses the chance to put Canada in front.

He’s got a wide open net to shoot at and he misses the goal. It’s a great opportunity but, uncharacteristically, MacKinnon wastes it.

A shot from Brock Faber just ricocheted off the cross bar, bouncing between the posts and flying out in a lucky strike for Canada’s goalie Jordan Binnington.

Canada's pressure pays off

Canada has been absolutely dominating this game and it felt like a matter of time before someone found the back of the net.

Now that Cole Makar has and knotted scored, feels like US needs to get attacking a little bit.

USA defense exhausted, Canada takes advantage

The Americans just can’t seem to get the puck out of their own territory, overworking goalie Connor Hellebuyck. Canada has had 24 shots on goal thus far, giving Hellebuyck a serious workout.

It's 1-1! Canada levels through Cale Makar

From CNN's Thomas Schlachter

Cale Makar ties the game for Canada as Connor Hellebuyck is finally beaten.

It needed to take something special to beat the US goalie and that placement from Makar could not be more perfect.

Huge penalty kill by USA in 2nd Half

Entering Sunday's gold-medal game, Team USA had not conceded a power play goal to opponents (15-for-15).

That streak was in danger of ending after the Americans were called for back-to-back penalties — Jake Guentzel was penalized for holding at 9:27 and Charlie McAvoy was called for hooking at 9:55— giving the Canadians a 5-on-3 advantage. Big saves by Connor Hellebuyck and good clears by the USA.

The goalies are putting on a clinic early in this period.

Team USA’s netminder, Connor Hellebuyck, has been tested repeatedly and has answered every call. He’s come up with several huge saves, holding firm to protect his team’s lead.

At the other end, Jordan Binnington isn’t blinking either. Canada’s goaltender has stayed sharp, turning aside chances to keep his side within striking distance, down by just one.

Dangerous giveaway from Team Canada, and Brock Nelson had a great look.

First Period: USA 0, Canada 0

The puck has dropped on one of the most anticipated hockey showdowns in years. For decades, the United States trailed Canada on the ice, but that gap has nearly vanished. Closing that final sliver may prove the toughest challenge yet. This is arguably the strongest roster the Americans have ever assembled. At the same time, Canada has iced one of the most gifted teams in its storied history—and that’s saying something.
