Melbourne Cup 2025 As It Happened, Results, Half Your Win, Melham make history

2025 Melbourne Cup Results, Winners, As it happened: Jamie Melham makes history as Half Yours wins

It’s that time again — not just Australia’s greatest race, but one of our most iconic traditions — the Melbourne Cup! 🇦🇺🐎

Come 3pm on the first Tuesday in November, the whole country will stop to watch the massive field tackle the famous 3200 metres — or two miles if you prefer the old school. What started as a local staying test has become one of the world’s premier handicap races, drawing the best from across the globe.

The Cup’s story is part of our national DNA. First run back in 1861, when Archer took the honours, it’s been won by legends like Carbine (1890), Phar Lap (1930), Rising Fast (1954), and the incomparable Makybe Diva, the only horse to ever win three on the trot (2003–05).

Flemington - Race 10 Results

1400m Channel 9 Trophy

🏆 Persian Spirit – Jockey: H. Coffey – Trainer: S. Wilde – Odds: 4.30/1.70

🥈 Sunshineinmypocket – Jockey: E. Brown – Trainer: C. Maher – Odds: 1.50

🥉 Ndola – Jockey: L. Currie – Trainer: B, W & J. Hayes – Odds: 1.80

Persian Spirit wins race 10

Persian Spirit has the Channel 9 Trophy, the last race on Melbourne Cup Day.

Ridden by Harry Coffey sprinted away to win easily.

Nick Russian’s tip - and it’s not about the races

Bar Bambi nightclub proprietor and one-time lord mayoral candidate Nick Russian said his business had done OK during winter, but many others in the CBD had not.

“We were fortunate. We’re still busy the whole way through,” Russian said.

“But I find it amazing how many people seem to leave Melbourne these days. They just pack up – Bali, Europe, or wherever.”

He quipped more people would come into the CBD if there were fewer protests.

Jockey who rode Half Yours before Melham’s triumphs

Jockey Ash Morgan admitted “it was a hard watch” when Half Yours won the Melbourne Cup before he quickly scored a consolation win with Matt Dale-trained So You Pence in the $250,000 Barn Dance at Randwick in Sydney.

Morgan won on Half Yours in the Caloundra Cup, then took it to fifth next start at Rosehill. He was due to ride it again in the Kingston Town Stakes at Randwick, but he was one scratching away from a start and instead raced in the Naturalism at Caulfield, where Jamie Melham began her winning streak aboard the Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained star.

“It was a hard watch,” Morgan said of the Cup. “[If he won here] he would have gone Metrop, Caulfield Cup … and I would have kept the ride. But I was committed to Private Harry here that day and I couldn’t get down to Melbourne.

“But I’m happy for Tony and Calvin. They are a great team.

“But if you told me this time last year I would be in contention for an Everest, Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup ride, I’d be pinching myself.

“I was here last year, but I was on a few 100-1 shots.”

After a long day, here’s what to know about race 10

Race 10 (5.15pm) Channel 9 Trophy (1400m)

(1st) 12 Persian Spirit

Jockey: Persian Spirit Trainer: Simon Wilde

(2nd) 19 Boltsaver

Jockey: Jye McNeil Trainer: Thys Archard

(3rd) 7 Sunshineinmypocket

Jockey: Ethan Brown Trainer: Ciaron Maher

(4th) 3 Ndola

Jockey: Luke Currie Trainer: Ben, Will & JD HayesRace 10

Russell says: Word of warning as we approach the last – make sure you tuck away 20 bucks for a train trip and snack on the way home. This race smacks of a box trifecta, searching for a small outlay and a decent dividend. I like the soft-track form of Persian Spirit (No.12) and Boltsaver (No.19), and will throw in a couple of roughies, Nostringsattached (No.15) and Ten Commandments (No.18). That way, you can either pay for tonight’s dinner, or keep the bank balance in check if it loses. Which, as we are constantly reminded, is a big chance.

Suggested bet: Box trifecta – 1st: 12, 19, 15, 18. $10 for 41 per cent.

Marquee dance floors kick off

With the main race done and dusted at the Melbourne Cup, the marquee dance floors in the Birdcage are kicking off.

Friends reunited on the dance floor in Crown included Liberal MP Sam Groth, his wife Brittany Groth, influencer turned podcast host Bec Judd and former footballer Chris Judd.

The two couples were last seen partying to DJ Dom Dolla at the LIV Golf event in Adelaide, where Groth attracted controversy over his use of taxpayer-funded travel allowances for accommodation and flights.

We also spotted deputy premier Ben Carroll, who started off in the Committee Room and then was marquee hopping.

“I’ve just been to Lexus and I’m going to say hello to Crown,” he says. “It’s a bit of support for all our businesses that are making and selling Melbourne right now.”

Carroll says he had not backed a winner for the day but is pleased to see Melbourne’s weather at least held off for the main race.

“Isn’t it just great to see what this means for Melbourne – this was our original major event and has been going for 150 years,” he says.

Melissa Leong is In The ‘Mood For Love’

The vivid colours, dramatic make-up and flip of her bob were clear signals that TV host Melissa Leong has been deep diving in the fashion film archives.

“Yes, I was heavily inspired by In The Mood For Love,” says Leong, about the influential Wong Kar-wai movie from 2000.

The movie moment was a fallback when Leong saw the weather report.

Shinn suffers serious leg injury

Kerrin McEvoy won race 9 on Dance to the Boom but his first thoughts were with fellow hoop Blake Shinn who fell from his horse during the race.

Shinn tumbled to the turf and is being attended by on-course medics.

“Firstly, I just hope Blake Shinn is OK,” McEvoy told Nine.

“You don’t like to see a riderless horse after a race.”

Nine reported Shinn has a serious leg injury and will be taken to hospital via ambulance but he is conscious and sitting up.

Dance To The Boom wins the stakes

Jockey Blake Shinn fell from She’s Got Pizzazz at about the 200m mark.

What the Cup jockeys said (part one)

1 Al Riffa. Jockey: Mark Zahra
“It was OK. I was four-wide and had to find a spot to get in and there was too much to do with that weight.”

2 Buckaroo. Jockey: Craig Williams
“We know how good a horse he is but in today’s race he was not far away from the eventual winner but he was three-wide on the back and basically put himself out of the race when they went slow.”

3 Arapaho. Jockey: Rachel King
“Really brave. He hasn’t had the best set up coming into today, but honest as ever.”

4 Vauban. Jockey: Blake Shinn
“He ran super. Big turnaround from the Caulfield Cup. Hit the line well but the winner and the other horse had a bit better turn-of-foot. Very proud of the horse.”

5 Chevalier Rose: Jockey: Damian Lane
“Disappointing. Unfortunately didn’t race to his best today.”

6 Presage Nocturne. Jockey: Stephane Pasquier
“A bit disappointed because he was favoured in the odds.”

7 Middle Earth. Jockey: Ethan Brown
“He ran great. This is obviously his trip, he showed his true colours today, he’s going to be a much better horse next prep, that’ll toughen him up, but he couldn’t have run much better.”

8 Meydaan. Jockey: James McDonald
“He ran well. Got into a lovely spot, switched off well but probably just found the 3200 a fraction far.”

9 Absurde. Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy
“He ran well. The pace wasn’t that strong through the first part, had to give them a start. He picked up into it well. Good honest run.”

10 Flatten The Curve. Jockey: Thore Hammer-Hansen
“I found myself a lot further back than ideal but he still ran a good race considering. Just probably went too quick early doors.”

11 Land Legend. Jockey: Joao Moreira
“No manners, pushed too hard. He did a lot of things wrong in the race.”

12 Smokin’ Romans. Jockey: Ben Melham
“He ran well, the old bugger. He’s just had a prep where he’s probably been running on firm ground. He’s got a bit soft ground and he’s just a bit over it. Proud of him anyway.”

Tennis champ plots comeback after a year off

The past year has been a character test for tennis champion Thanasi Kokkinakis, who has spent the year away from the courts after a combination of shoulder and pectoral surgery no other tennis star has experienced before.

“It’s tough to come back after a 12-month layoff. My last tournament was the Aussie Open,” he said from the G.H. Mumm marquee.

Thanasi Kokkinakis on champagne duty.

“I enjoyed the first couple months of not playing and not worrying about tournaments, but now I’m kind of getting the edge to get back into it and give myself some more purpose again.

“I’m tracking OK, there’s some good days, some bad days. Rehabs are never a straight line. I’m hoping to start in my home tournament in Adelaide and get ready for the Aussie Open.”

Jamie Melham had her grandfather with her on the track today

Jamie Melham paid tribute to her late grandfather in an interview with Nine after her history-making win in the Melbourne Cup.

It turns out she had a little part of him with her during the race.

Melham revealed in a second interview with Nine that her grandfather’s lapel pin was tucked away underneath her silks.

The Half Yours team celebrates Cup dream

This is how jockey Jamie Melham and the jubilant connections of Half Yours erupted after winning the race that stops a nation.

Waller has no regrets as Buckaroo finishes last

Buckaroo’s trainer Chris Waller said he had no regrets about the decision to run the seven-year-old in the race after it finished last in the Melbourne Cup.

After confirming the horse had pulled up OK, Waller said the horse raced too fiercely in the slowly run race and could not get into the right rhythm to conserve his energy for a strong finish.

“He didn’t get his breathing right and was too keen,” Waller told this masthead.

Stewards reported that the horse had experienced exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhage.

Buckaroo is expected to recover quickly from the run.

The Bird is the word in race 9

Race 9 (5.40pm) Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (1400m)

(1st) 15 Surfin’ Bird
Jockey: Tim Clark; Trainer: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

(2nd) 5 Bossy Nic
Jockey: Joao Moreira; Trainer: Tony & Calvin McEvoy

(3rd) 11 Keep Your Cool
Jockey: Craig Williams; Trainer: Ciaron Maher

(4th) 7 Electric Impulse
Jockey: John Allen; Trainer: Henry Dwyer

What we say: Surfin’ Bird (No.15) looks to be catching the crest of a wave this spring, smashing rivals in slick closing sectionals last start. For those not in the know, using the term “sectionals” is a fancy way of pretending you know what you are talking about. In this case, Surfin’ Bird was really fast over the last 200 metres. Outside the favourite, it’s an open field. Have looked for wet track form and landed on Bossy Nic (No.5), Keep Your Cool (No.11) and Electric Impulse (No.7), which hasn’t raced for a year so it should be very nice and relaxed.

‘Nobody said a thing’: Julie Bishop on Andrew and the King

Birdcage regular, former foreign minister and Australian National University chancellor Julie Bishop arrived at the Lexus marquee after flying in from London, where she met King Charles III at St James Palace.

Bishop says her meeting with the King occurred just as the scandal engulfing Andrew Mountbatten Windsor (formerly Prince Andrew) continued to grow, but everyone was tight-lipped.

Burma Star has won race eight The Amanda Elliott at Flemington today.

'Half goes to him': Jamie Melham's unique deal with husband

After winning the Melbourne Cup Jamie Melham may regret promising half the prizemoney to her husband and fellow jockey Ben in the lead-up to the great race.

“Ben loves the name,” Melham said about her Melbourne Cup mount Half Yours.

“Now we’re married, half (prizemoney) goes to him and half goes to me.”

Knot The Matrix

Fashions on the Field entrant Alison Wenske is familiar with standing out in a crowd.

“I come from a town in the Riverland in South Australia that’s 105 people,” Wenske says. “A few less than this gathering.”

While Wenske’s bold patterned Alice + Olivia suit and Eve Til Dawn red straw hat weren’t short of attention, her gold Otaa tie would stop traffic in any town or city.

Tragedy, scrutiny, coma: A look back at how Melham got back on the horse

Jamie Melham, formerly Kah, has made history as the second woman in history to win the Melbourne Cup.

She’s survived a bad fall, tragedy and more than her fair share of controversy.

We're underway

The 3200m Lexus Melbourne Cup has begun!

Approaching the gates now

The horses are warming up now, we're not far away.

Rain has eased

The rain has eased a little bit and the anticipation is building now at Flemington with everyone getting a chance to see the horses

Modest hopes for first US runner

Just bumped into Nine’s Wide World of Sports US correspondent Brad Blanks on track, and he is all across the form of the first-ever American horse to run in the Melbourne Cup.

Blanks says he doesn’t hold high hopes for Parchment Party because it is a dirt-track specialist – a big part of American racing – and has never won on turf.

Horses in the mounting yard, 10mins until jump

The horses are parading around the mounting yard.

10 minutes to jump and the rain looks to have eased just in time.

It’s almost time for the race that stops the nation.

MOST AWAITING: And the build up begins! ⏰ Who You Pick

Six races down, four races to go. Next up: The 2025 Melbourne Cup 🔥

Let’s hope we can turn that around for the Melbourne Cup, coming up next, with top pick Half Yours.

It was a great ride by Irishman John Allen to pinch a break on the Gavin Bedggood Kingswood so that he could hold off Ethan Brown on the Ciaron Maher-trained St George.

Allen does not have a ride in the Cup, while Brown is on outsider Middle Earth.

If you like greys in the Cup, look out for Presage Nocturne (No.6) and Valiant King (No.24).

Both have great chances.

Flaminton Race 6 - Kingswood wins the Ichiban Plate, Race 6 Results

Kingswood has won the race 6 Ichiban Plate over 1800m at Flemington today ridden by John Allen.

What a finish that was with the two greys going stride for stride down the Flemington straight. Kingswood proved too tough, fending off the well-backed favourite Saint George, who loomed to win but couldn’t quite get past. The winner showed real grit, holding a clear margin on his rival for the entire run home.

🏆 Kingswood – Jockey: J. Allen – Trainer: G. Bedggood – Odds: 4.50/1.70

🥈 Saint George – Jockey: E. Brown – Trainer: C. Maher – Odds: 1.50

🥉 Shaiyhar – Jockey: R. King – Trainer: T. Busuttin & N. Young – Odds: 6.40

4️⃣ Unspoken –

Melbourne Cup Field Fun fact

The Melbourne Cup field is currently limited to 24 runners, making it one of the biggest fields in Australian racing. Of course, sometimes there are fewer runners due to late scratchings. But believe it or not, the largest Melbourne Cup field consisted of a whopping 39 runners back in 1890! The smallest field to contest the race? There were just seven in 1963.

The $500,000 bet that made Al Riffa the favourite

A bet of $500,000 to win $4 million was placed with bookmaker Chris Lester on Al Riffa to win the Melbourne Cup, helping to catapult the Joseph O’Brien-trained six-year-old to favouritism.

Al Riffa is paying $7.50 for the win, after punters plunged on the top weight at Monday’s Call of the Card. Easygo launched the half-a-million-dollar bet at the $8 Lester offered for the noted wet-tracker.

Michelle Payne had this to say about Al Riffa as she rated every Cup horse for this masthead. Mark Zahra, who is in hot form, is the jockey on board.

Which barrier has produced the most Melbourne Cup winners?

FUN FACT: Barrier five has been the most successful thanks to the triumph of Knight's Choice last year, the gate now producing a total of nine winners. Barrier 14 has produced eight.

Flemington Race 5 - Litzdeel wins the Heritage Cup, Results

Litzdeel has won the Australian Heritage Cup at Flemington today.

The younger sibling of Melbourne Cup winner Vow And Declare smashes them in the Australian Heritage Cup! Litzdeel was sitting in the sweet spot behind the leader's back and burst through them when a gap opened along the rail. Was suited by a moderate-to-slow tempo but that was mightily impressive.

🏆 Litzdeel – Jockey: C. Williams – Trainer: D. O'Brien – Odds: 4.80/2.10

🥈 Don Diego De Vega – Jockey: M. Dee – Trainer: A. & R. Archibald – Odds: 2.60

🥉 Farag – Jockey: A. Purcell – Trainer: L. Meech – Odds: 22.50

4️⃣ Ferago – Jockey: Craig Newitt – Trainer: Patrick Ryan

What's the most successful Melbourne Cup saddlecloth?

FUN FACT: Horses that have been assigned with the No. 4 saddle have been the most successful with 12 wins, Verry Elleegant the most recent in 2021. Numbers one and 12 each have 11 wins, while No. 6 has 10. As for the unluckiest numbers -- seven, 16, 18, and 21 have the least amount of wins with two each.

FLEMINGTON RACE 4 - Pallaton wins the 1000m The Schweppervescence Plate, results

James McDonald is on the board for the Flemington carnival.

He partners Pallaton for a fairly convincing win down the Flemington straight. Mark Zahra's mount Street Artist finished in 2nd.

The champion jockey didn't ride in Melbourne on Derby Day to stay in Sydney and partner Autumn Glow in the Golden Eagle but will ride at Flemington for the remaining three days of the carnival.

🏆 Pallaton – Jockey: J. McDonald – Trainer: M. Freedman – Odds: 2.80/1.40

🥈 Street Artist – Jockey: M. Zahra – Trainer: A. & S. Freedman – Odds: 1.70

🥉 Vangogh Bankcheque – Jockey: J. Melham – Trainer: L. Kennewell – Odds: 3.40

4️⃣ Blethyn – Jockey: Jake Noonan – Trainer: Matt Laurie

FLEMINGTON RACE 3 - Mark Zahra wins TAB Trophy, Results

Mark Zahra partners impressive winner Different Gravy to win the third race at Flemington, with the horse showing off a lovely turn of foot to record a soft win in the end.

Channel 9 horseback reporter Billy Slater asked Zahra if James McDonald's Flemington Spring Carnival record of 11 wins is in his sights.

"Let's take it one race at a time shall we. If I win the Cup, that'll be good enough," Zahra replied.

1st - #4 Different Gravy ($4.60)

2nd - #5 Brave Danza ($7.00pl)

3rd - #2 Obvious ($3.10pl)

RACE 2 - Party Crasher wins race 2

Party Crasher showed Mark Zahra’s form has not disappeared since Derby Day as he rode a beauty to get the talented gelding home.

The horse’s form is outstanding, with six placings in seven starts.

Pittsburgh Pirate added value to the exotics, backing up his Horsham Cup run to finish second, while the emergency Ghetto Supastar made the most of her late entrance into the field to run third.

1st - 10. Party Crasher ($4.60)

2nd - 5. Pittsburgh Pirate ($6.00pl)

3rd - 20. Ghetto Supastar ($3.00pl)

RACE 1- Tornado Valley wins the Darley Maribyrnong Plate Race 1, results

There's been some early drama at Flemington, with the winner of the first race Tornado Valley surviving a protest.

Tornado Valley crossed the line 0.35L ahead of runner up Tales of Time, but the connections of the 2nd horse lodged a protest citing interference.

Stewards didn't take too long to deliberate before dismissing the protest, meaning the original placings stand.

1st - #2 Tornado Valley ($5.50),

2nd - #7 Tales of Time ($4.40 pl)

3rd - #11 Luna Vega ($3.00pl)
