When is the 2025 Honolulu Marathon: Schedule, Date, Start Time, Route Course Map PDF, Prize money, How To Watch
Honolulu’s marathon has this dreamy, ocean-side mystique: a pre-dawn start, warm air, palm trees doing their breezy spectator thing, and a field full of everyone from first-timers to mileage philosophers. It’s one of the world’s biggest open marathons, famous for its inclusive vibe rather than its prize purse.
Routinely one of the largest marathons in the country, the Honolulu Marathon kicked off at 5 a.m. local time on Sunday, December 14 in wet conditions.
Organizers were expecting a record 42,000 runners throughout the race weekend, which also included a road mile on Saturday and a 10K that started at the same time as the marathon.
Tsegay Weldlibanos of Eritrea took the men’s marathon win, stopping the clock in 2:13:41, while Calli Hauger-Thackery—an Olympian for Great Britain in 2024—won the women’s title in 2:30:44. Both athletes train in Flagstaff, Arizona.

What is the 2025 Honolulu Marathon route, course map, pdf download
The course begins near Ala Moana Boulevard, rolls through Downtown Honolulu, arcs past Waikīkī, climbs the scenic shoulder of Diamond Head, stretches through Hawai‘i Kai, and loops back to finish in Kapiʻolani Park. It’s a coastal postcard with aid stations.
The JAL Honolulu Marathon starts on Ala Moana Boulevard, which in Hawaiian means “path by the ocean.” This phrase is an appropriate description for the entire race course. At the Starting Line is Ala Moana Beach Park, a local recreation area encompassing over 100 acres of park, beaches, swimming and surfing spots.
As the last mile of the course curves around Diamond Head toward the finish in Waikiki, the route passes Cliffs, a popular surfing spot, and the Diamond Head Lighthouse. At the tip of Kapiolani Park, runners fork onto Kalakaua Avenue. The last stretch of the race runs along the park past Sans Souci Beach and the Waikiki Aquarium to the Finish Line near the Kapiolani Park Bandstand.
Is the Honolulu Marathon always in December?
Yes. It’s held every year on the second Sunday of December, a long-standing tradition.
Is it true only 1% of people run a marathon?
Roughly. If you look at the global population, marathon finishers are indeed around the one-percent neighborhood. It’s not a hard scientific figure, but it’s a fair ballpark.
