Benson Kipruto Wins Thrilling 2025 NYC Marathon in Photo Finish

Benson Kipruto Wins a Thrilling 2025 New York City Marathon by a second.

The 2025 TCS New York City Marathon delivered one of its most dramatic finishes in recent memory as Benson Kipruto of Kenya claimed victory in the men’s race — but not without a scare at the very end.

Kipruto, brimming with confidence, lifted his arms in celebration just before crossing the finish line, convinced the crown was his. Behind him, fellow Kenyan Alexander Mutiso Munyao was charging hard, closing the gap with a final burst that nearly upended the result. In a breathtaking photo finish, Kipruto held on by less than two-tenths of a second, winning in 2:08:09.

It was a razor-thin margin — just 0.16 seconds separating triumph from heartbreak. Munyao took second place, while Albert Korir completed a clean Kenyan podium sweep, finishing third.

For Kipruto, this victory adds New York to his remarkable list of marathon conquests, which already includes Tokyo, Chicago, and Boston. His run through the five boroughs showcased both experience and heart — a lesson in how victory, even for the most seasoned champions, can come down to the final heartbeat.

New York once again proved its reputation as a marathon of stories — and Kipruto’s finish will be remembered as one of its most pulse-pounding chapters yet.
