Jamie Melham Makes History as First Female Jockey to Win the 2025 Caulfield Cup in 146 Years
By Sportshistori.com - October 18, 2025
Australian jockey Jamie Melham has made history, becoming the first woman ever to win the Caulfield Cup after guiding Half Yours to victory in the $5 million 2025 Caulfield Cup.
A Historic First for Female Jockeys
In the 146-year history of the race, no female jockey had ever lifted the famous trophy — until now.
Melham’s ride on favourite Half Yours, trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, was nothing short of perfect. She settled the gelding mid-field before surging clear in the straight to beat River of Stars and Valiant King.
From Near-Death to Glory
The win caps an extraordinary comeback for Melham, who suffered life-threatening injuries in a 2023 Flemington race fall that left her in a coma and with multiple fractures.
Two years later, she’s not only returned to racing but conquered one of its greatest prizes.
“Just saying ‘Caulfield Cup’ makes me cry,” Melham told Channel 7.
“I’ve won 17 Group 1s, but this one means the world.”
Proud Moment for the McEvoys
Co-trainer Tony McEvoy called the win a “proud moment” for the stable and his son Calvin.
Half Yours, bought for $305,000 last year, has now earned nearly ten times that amount after Saturday’s victory.
Melham Eyes the Melbourne Cup Next
Having finally claimed the Caulfield Cup, Melham says she now has her eyes on the Melbourne Cup to complete a dream Spring Racing Carnival.
Her historic triumph marks a new era for women in horse racing — inspiring fans across Australia and New Zealand.
