Trump Expected at Ryder Cup; Luke Donald Says Teams Will Be Ready

Luke Donald: Ryder Cup Organizers Should Be Ready for Trump’s Visit

European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald isn’t too worried about Donald Trump showing up at this year’s matches, but he hopes organizers are better prepared than tennis officials were at the U.S. Open.

Trump, an avid golfer, has said he’ll be at Bethpage Black in New York on Friday, Sept. 26, for the start of the three-day showdown between the United States and Europe.

“I guess he’ll want to be on the first tee,” Donald said Wednesday. “We know he’s coming, and both teams will be ready for that.”

When Trump attended the U.S. Open men’s final last weekend, his surprise appearance caused major delays. Extra security led to long lines and pushed the start of the match between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner back by half an hour.

At least this time, the PGA of America ,  which is running the Ryder Cup   has advance notice.

“The PGA of America is organizing this. There were delays at the tennis, as you probably know, but hopefully they’ve learned from that,” Donald said at the BMW PGA Championship in Wentworth. “It’s a big deal when a president comes to an event. Security is intense, and it takes a lot of work. Their job is to make it seamless. He’ll probably want to greet the players, and the crowd will be loud no matter what.”

Trump has a history of making his presence felt at big golf events. Back in 2017, he arrived late at the Presidents Cup in New Jersey but still took center stage, presenting the trophy to the winning American team.
