Bengals Add QBs Sean Clifford, Mike White After Burrow Injury
The Cincinnati Bengals are scrambling to stabilize their quarterback room after losing Joe Burrow for at least three months to a turf toe injury. On Tuesday, the team moved quickly to bring in reinforcements, signing Sean Clifford and Mike White to the practice squad, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Clifford, 27, was drafted in the fifth round by the Green Bay Packers in 2023 but never threw a regular-season pass. He was cut this summer after a little more than two seasons with the team. Before that, he was a four-year starter at Penn State, where he threw for over 10,600 yards and 86 touchdowns while beating out Will Levis for the starting job back in 2019.
White, 30, arrives with more experience. A fifth-round pick by the Cowboys in 2018, he made his first start in 2021 with the New York Jets — famously leading an upset win over the Bengals in his debut by throwing for 405 yards and three touchdowns. Since then, White has compiled a 2–5 career record as a starter, completing just over 61% of his passes for 2,247 yards, nine touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. The Bengals will be his fifth NFL team after short stints with the Cowboys, Jets, Dolphins, and Bills.
Cincinnati’s QB Depth Chart
With Burrow sidelined, the Bengals now have four healthy quarterbacks in the building:
-
Jake Browning
-
Brett Rypien
-
Sean Clifford (practice squad)
-
Mike White (practice squad)
Browning, who impressed in relief against the Jaguars with 241 passing yards and two touchdowns, is expected to start. The Bengals are also elevating Brett Rypien to the 53-man roster, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, making him the likely backup.
That leaves Clifford and White on the practice squad, where the team may let them compete for the third-string spot as the season unfolds.
