US Open 2025: Alcaraz Advances, Venus Williams Bids Emotional Farewell
The opening round of the US Open 2025 delivered a mix of dominance, drama, and emotion. Rising star Carlos Alcaraz stormed into the second round with ease, while tennis legend Venus Williams bowed out after a hard-fought battle on her return to Flushing Meadows.
Alcaraz Cruises Past Opelka Under the Lights
Top contender Carlos Alcaraz showed no signs of nerves as he dismantled big-serving American Reilly Opelka 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 under the bright lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Sporting a fresh buzz cut that quickly caught attention on social media, Alcaraz controlled the match from start to finish, breaking Opelka at key moments to wrap up the straight-sets win.
The Spaniard will face Italian Mattia Bellucci in the second round as he continues his quest for another Grand Slam title.
Venus Williams Makes Emotional US Open Exit
At 45, Venus Williams returned to the US Open after a year-long hiatus and reminded fans of her trademark grit. Facing 11th seed Karolina Muchova, Williams forced a deciding set before falling 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
Despite the defeat, Williams expressed pride in her performance:
“I’m very proud of how I played. Getting back on the court was about giving myself a chance to play more healthy,” she said.
Williams, who revealed in 2011 that she has Sjogren’s syndrome, reflected on the challenges of playing with health concerns:
“When you play unhealthy, it’s in your mind. It’s not just how you feel. You get stuck in your mind too. So it was nice to be freer.”
Her exit marked an emotional moment for fans who have followed her remarkable career.
Andreeva, Zarazua, and Parry Shine
Elsewhere, teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva put on a near-perfect display, crushing Alycia Parks 6-0, 6-1 on Louis Armstrong Stadium.
In one of the biggest shocks of the day, Madison Keys, seeded sixth, suffered a stunning upset against Mexico’s Renata Zarazua. After three hours and ten minutes of drama, Zarazua prevailed 6-7(10), 7-6(3), 7-5, saving seven break points along the way for her first-ever win over a top-10 opponent.
Visibly emotional after the victory, Zarazua said:
“Coming into the match I was almost crying because I was really nervous, but the crowd made it so chill for me. I could hear some Mexican fans cheering, and that was very nice.”
Zarazua will now face Diane Parry, who ended Petra Kvitova’s career with a resounding 6-1, 6-0 win.
Krejcikova, Tiafoe, and Draper Advance
Two-time major winner Barbora Krejcikova shook off injury concerns to beat Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko 6-3, 6-2, setting up a second-round clash with Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima.
On the men’s side, Frances Tiafoe lifted American hopes with a convincing 6-3, 7-6(6), 6-3 win over Yoshihito Nishioka, firing 19 aces to close out the afternoon on Ashe. Tiafoe joins fellow Americans Taylor Fritz (No. 4 seed) and Ben Shelton (No. 6 seed) in the second round as the trio chase the dream of ending a 22-year U.S. Open men’s singles drought.
Last year’s semifinalist Jack Draper also moved through, defeating Argentine qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez 6-4, 7-5, 6-7(7), 6-2 to book a matchup with Belgian Zizou Bergs.
