Sydney Marathon 2025: World Marathon Majors Debut with 35,000 Runners and Global Superstars
The Sydney Marathon is set for a historic moment as it officially joins the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors, alongside iconic races in Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York. More than 35,000 runners will hit the streets of Sydney, marking the biggest field in the event’s history — up by 10,000 participants from last year.
Runners will experience Sydney’s stunning 26.2-mile course, as one of the most picturesque marathon routes in the world, weaving past Sydney’s most famous landmarks, including the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. But don’t be fooled — while the scenery is breathtaking, the course includes challenging hills that could test both elite athletes and first-time marathoners.
With its new World Marathon Majors status, Sydney is ready to deliver an unforgettable race that cements its place on the global running stage. Whether you’re chasing a personal best, cheering from the sidelines, or watching the elite showdown unfold, the Sydney Marathon 2025 promises to be one of the most exciting races of the year.
Kiros also produced a new record time, crossing the finish line at the Sydney Opera House in 2:06.06, 10 seconds clear of fellow Ethiopian Addisu Gobena, a star of the future aged just 20.
Fellow Ethiopian, Gobena placed second with a time of 02:06:16. Lesotho's Tebello Ramakongoana finished third in the Elite Men’s division, crossing the line with a time of 02:06:47.
Noted as the GOAT of marathon racing, two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge finished ninth in the marathon. Kipchoge turned in a final time of 02:08:31 after the 42.195km.
In the Elite Women’s division, one name stuck out above the rest. Sifan Hassan, the 2024 Olympic gold medalist, claimed the top spot at the Sydney Marathon. Hassan crossed the line with an impressive 02:18:22, which is the fastest women’s marathon time in Australia to date.
