2026 Belmont Stakes Prize Money: How much winner Golden Tempo earns

Belmont Stakes 2026 Payout, Prize Money Purse and Triple Crown Order of Finish at Saratoga race.

The Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown, concluded its 157th edition at Saratoga Race Course, crowning a new champion. This prestigious American Grade I stakes race featured eight three-year-old thoroughbreds, with Sovereignty crossing the finish line first.

Golden Tempo won the 2026 Belmont Stakes on June 6 at Saratoga Race Course. Ridden by Jose Ortiz, the horse completed the 1½-mile race in 2:03.49 on a muddy track during rainy conditions. Commandment finished second, while Renegade placed third.

The Belmont Stakes was the final race of the Triple Crown series, following the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. Golden Tempo won the Kentucky Derby in May but skipped the Preakness to focus on health and recovery.

Trainer Cherie DeVaux made history as the first woman to win two Triple Crown races in the same year. After becoming the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby, she also became only the second woman to win the Belmont Stakes, following Jena Antonucci, who won with Arcangelo in 2023...

Although no Triple Crown winner emerged this year, but the Belmont Stakes winner delivered on its promise of excitement.

158th Belmont Stakes purse: Total purse, winner's share

The Belmont doesn't come with quite the payday that we see at the Derby, but it's even with Preakness with a total purse of $2 million. That's the same as it was back in 2025, and $3 million shy of the Kentucky Derby's $5 million purse.

Of that $2 million, 68 percent goes to the winner, a little bit higher but still roughly on par with the other two legs of the Triple Crown.

Belmont Stakes prize money: How much do jockeys and trainers take home?

Owners: 80% of total purse

Trainer: 10% of total purse

Jockey: 10% of total purse

The owners take home most of the winnings, but jockeys and trainers make a decent amount of money as well. Owners take home roughly 80 percent of the funds, leaving around 10 percent for the jockeys and trainers. This means that for the winning horse, jockeys and trainers should make around $120,000, with the owners taking home roughly $960,000.
